With all the info coming in about the cancer causing properties of cell phones and radiation causing devices what is the legal aspects?

Very unlikely, the idea that cell phones may cause cancer has been studied for a while and I believe within the next few years we will be able to say definitively that they don’t. Large studies over longer periods of time can’t show any substantial connection and personally I would just need to see a study 5 years from now confirm it.

4G phones will work on the same wavelength as household microwaves, which is probably safe. The fact remains that we stay on phones longer and longer at these higher microwave level frequencies so studies currently underway won’t be convincing for a few years.

Asbestos is a fiber that actually embedded itself in the lung and caused a complicated and low reaction. In the case of cell phones we know a lot more about the possible factors. It is true that cell phones cause neurons to use more energy than normal, but why isn’t yet known.

If its not too much I’ll have it removed. If its high I would go over it with another material. I have searched far and wide on The Internet and can’t find a real world cost/price. I would like to know what the range is before interviewing a contractor.
I am seeking answers from persons who have actually paid a licensed Asbestos Removal company to remove asbestos tiles from concrete in a basement. Answers from persons who had this done in Northern Virginia would be particularly useful.

In that area, $2 a sqare foot with a minimum ($1k-$2k) will be average. It depends on several factors including the presence of asbestos in the mastic, the techniques needed to remove the tile and mastic, and factors such as is the room already clear (furniture, etc). Your best bet is to call three companies and get three estimates (free or find another company). Lastly, it also depends on the time of year with summer and Christmas being higher priced. Make sure any company is licensed and insured.

for example, living with someone who works sometimes with asbestos and so may bring it home on there clothes?

Some scientists are looking into this possibility. Still, you don’t need to concern yourself too much on this matter. The bigger danger comes from direct exposure. So, make it your job to learn more about the dangers of asbestos.

The roof sheeting was removed from an old warehouse. I’m sure it contained asbesto as it was a very old building. What asbestos does roof sheeting normally contain? When it was removed, the removers sealed off the area they were working on using sheets. As they moved along the roof removing section by section, they moved the sheeting along with them. The work took about 2 months to complete. After they had finished, there was a lot of dust let over on top of shelves in the warehouse. The dust was not blue or brown so is that a good thing? To remove the dust, it was sprayed to make it wet to remove it. How dangerous could this have been on my health? I was in the building working during the whole removal process?

Call your local city hall, and find out if they got all the
permits, and whether the work conformed to safety

is it people who work with the raw material everyday for many years??

It is actually people who work with the processed products for years. When ship builders sprayed the inside of ships, they lived in a fog of airborne asbestos. When people were molding and cutting car brakes, they lived in a cloud of asbestos. Boiler workers when insulting lived in a cloud. Those are the people that have been shown to be more likely to get asbestos related diseases. Normal people are more likely to be struck by lightening than get hurt by asbestos.

I signed a lease for the on-campus apartment complex called "Bannockburn" at UC Riverside this morning. I was looking up stuff on it this afternoon out of curiosity, and in the Housing Handbook from 2009 it says that they found asbestos in the entire complex, mainly in the ceilings and attics. You’re not supposed to vacuum ceiling particles from the floor, poke holes in the wall, for fear that it will become airborne and your health will be at risk. My question:

Is the University allowed to do this legally? Are they allowed to have me move in to Bannockburn and *not* tell me about the known asbestos? They did not tell me it was there. My boyfriend has lived at Bannockburn for a year and had no idea that it was there either, until I told him. They are taking no action to get rid of the asbestos. I have a close family member that died from mesothelioma due to Asbestos Exposure and am very concerned for my health after a year of living here. I have no other housing options at this point. Is this legal? Can I take action against the University to fix this? I am not just concerned for my own health–I’m concerned for their lack of regard for the health of their students that are living here…

Asbestos inside concrete is completely safe.
No, seriously. Asbestos becomes a danger when it is in the form of airborne particles. If it’s embedded in concrete, it is completely safe. If you drill a hole in the wall, you will create small airborne particles. Tearing down a building with asbestos in the concrete creates a lot of danger because of all the dust generated, while leaving it in place doesn’t put the stuff into the air. I’ve been in several industrial facilities that have warning signs on old pipe insulation. They say Do Not Disturb. Extensive precautions must be taken to work on those pipes, but again if it’s left alone the stuff isn’t airborne and therefore isn’t a risk.

It does concern me that they don’t want you vacuuming ceiling tile particles. Those can be replaced, and in fact usually have to be replaced as they decay over time. That’s rather different from saying they found it in the concrete walls. However, I doubt you have any kind of legal recourse per se. It’s very likely that whatever they are doing has already been cleared through the building inspector. You should try and get more information from them though… any real asbestos evaluation will identify the specific sources. It shouldn’t say "ceiling", it should say "ceiling tiles" or "spray insulation above ceiling tiles" or "pipe insulation". Then you’ll know what the issues really are.

I was exposed two nights in a row for approximately 3 hours each night. I currently have an unrelated respiratory infection…does this increase my chances of being affected?
Is their any way that I can get checked for symptoms of mesothelioma or other such asbestos related diseases this soon after exposure? If necessary i’d like to start treatment as soon as possible. Thanks

There’s nothing that you can do about it now. Mesothelioma doesn’t show up until decades after exposure. The best thing that you can do now is quit smoking if you smoke.

Seriously, it’s not the end of the world. We’re all exposed to asbestos and asbestos related diseases are still pretty rare. It’s known as an occupational disease because it’s mostly people who work with it day in and day out for years who get sick, but still…. you may want to get a chest x-ray twenty years from now just to make sure everything is alright.

Been working at a place full of rats, roaches, & asbestos. The employees are a bunch of arrogant bullies who think that they are the best in the industry. When in fact they suck. They are in denial about their bullying behavior. This behavior is engranded in their culture. The main bully influences others to behave in mean and belittling manner and in some instances violate my personal privacy in a public setting. I suspect he was abused/molested/raped as a child or something. That does not give anyone the right to mistreat others in a PROFESSIONAL work environment. The company is run through fear, an OLD ideology that does not work anymore because employees can file lawsuits. Many of the employees really are in dead end jobs so I am not sure if that is the reason they participate (hate their life, situation) or they are just afraid of being a target themselves. I am hoping that the whole company is not this f*cked up but based on what I have seen chances are slim.

              Two things:

              1. If the environment is not right for you, then seek other employment and/or address the situation with someone in the company who is not in your situation – HR is generally a good starting point.

              2. If you are in the US, go to www.eeoc.gov and click on harassment. If what you read there applies to your situation, then I’d suggest going to HR with the facts of your situation and having a professional conversation around how to solve it. If you don’t get resolve there, you can file a complaint with the EEOC and take the legal route – while at the same time looking for another job.

Mesothelioma in itself is one of the deadliest diseases ever to have been discovered by mankind. Medically, Mesothelioma as a word itself means a tumor that is more likely to transform in a fast proliferating cancer which affects the mesothelial cells of an organ, which form the protective thin covering over the organs like heart, lungs and abdomen.

Whatever is the verbal definition given out to this deadly disease, but those can never for sure weigh the deadliness of this fatal disease. It is an absolutely fatal disease which has taken many a people into its deadly grip. The maximum period of survival after the disease has been diagnosed, has come to the most of a year or two. It is worse form of cancer which is not curable. However, recent studies have suggested that if the disease can be diagnosed at a very early stage then the life of the individual who gets affected by this deadly disease, can be stretched till at the most of 5 years.

The treatment of this disease is very expensive but the treatment doesn’t assure life but a few more days, to procure the huge lump-sum required for the treatment, people also file lawsuits to cover the huge incurring expenses for the treatment.

The main cause of mesothelioma has been detected as to the prolonged exposure to asbestos. Most of the patients that have been diagnosed with the disease, had acquired the disease cause of prolonged exposure to asbestos. The statistics of the mesothelioma patients has revealed the connection between the asbestos and the dangerous cancer syndrome.

And usually this disease is found to affect people and workers who work in industries. Usually, industries use asbestos as an imperative input for carrying on different processes; it is being used in factories, automobile, shipyard and construction. Direct exposure to loose asbestos fibers can develop the symptoms of mesothelioma, but the infected cells can remain dormant in the body for a long period of about 15-20 years.

But the worst par of the disease is the fact that this disease generally gets detected in older days i.e. at the age of 50-60 years and also mostly in the last stage. Thereby, reducing the chances of the individual’s recovery. So this is very necessary that people who are likely to take in much asbestos particles should be scanned regularly for any symptoms of mesothelioma.

Government policies have empowered the mesothelioma patients to claim for compensation. They can file lawsuits with the help of their attorneys for claiming such compensation. The mesothelioma victims can sue the company in which he had been employed into, for not being socially rational, but being more inclined towards the flowing profits, and not undertaking any steps to slacken the use of asbestos or using in a more protective way which has resulted in endangering the lives of the employees.
